This is the perfect course for anyone over the age of 16 looking to start sailing! This course provides a short introduction to sailing for novices, by the end of the course, participants will have a basic understanding of boat handling techniques and background knowledge.

On completion of this 2 day RYA start sailing level 2 course the successful student will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in light winds.

Tuition will be given by RYA trained keelboat instructors, using appropriate supervision ratios of a maximum of 6 students per boat. The students’ knowledge and ability will be assessed on a continuous basis, though an oral interview may be used as the basis for theory assessment if required.  Students will be kept informed of their individual progress throughout the course.

Course Content:

Section A – Practical elements including; 

  • Rigging
  • Ropework
  • Sailing Techniques and Manoeuvres

You will be taught the practical understanding of the following;

  • The Five Essentials – Course made good, Trim, Balance, Sail setting, and Centreboard/keel* (*n/a Keelboats).
  • Leaving and returning to a beach, jetty or mooring.
  • Coming alongside a moored boat.
  • Knows basic rules of the road: power/sail, port/starboard, windward boat, overtaking boat.
  • Aware of lee shore dangers, sailing in close company with others and man overboard recovery.
  • Able to paddle a sailing dinghy and row a boat around a short triangular course, come alongside and make fast.

Section B – Onshore teaching including;

  • Meteorology
  • Clothing & Equipment
  • Emergency Equipment & procedures

Sailing Theory and Background

  • Has knowledge of: Points of sailing and No Go Zone.
  • How a sail works – basic aerodynamic theory.
  • Sea Sailing – Basic advice for inland sailors, including taking local advice. Speed over ground with/against tidal flow.
  • Inland sailing – basic advice including local bylaws, permits, overhead power lines, locks and weirs.
  • The dangers of hypothermia and the importance of first aid training, particularly cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

ICC for using a Dinghy Abroad

The RYA Dinghy level 2 Certificate is internationally recognised as a Certificate of Competence and is often required when hiring dinghies abroad.

Assumed Knowledge:

Beginner. May be preceded by RYA Dinghy Level 1 (Start Sailing)

Ability after the course:

Able to sail and make decisions in good conditions.

Description:

Provela’s sailing club is located in the village marina of Mar de Cristal on the shores of the Mar Menor a 170 square kilometre lagoon, with great winds which has been affectionately dubbed “one of sailing’s best kept secrets”. With  fine sandy beach and a promenade that links via the beach to Playa Honda in the south, with a selection of bars, cafes and shops, but the stunning views from the sailing club and beach across to the La Manga Strip make a visit here well worth it!
